Asia as a region accounts for more than 25% percent of world nickel production, (Indonesia 15% and Philippines 10%) with China as the world’s largest nickel consumption country. Nickel is a major source of producing stainless steel. Asia again has the most top stainless steel producers in the region, e.g. China, South Korea, India, Taiwan and Japan. With the rapid development of Asian economies, the demand of stainless steel and nickel is growing annually - Chinese imports of nickel ore rose 29 percent in March from a year earlier and 33 percent in April.
