Crew Management
About the Course
Crew Management is a two-day course that provides a comprehensive and practical understanding of the needs of any person that is involved in, or wants to be involved in Crew matters.
It covers the subject from the international requirements of the law, e.g. Maritime Labour Convention, STCW etc; crewing and setting up the manning of a ship, through details of organizing crew and their contracts to the everyday challenges experienced by seafarers.
All of the subjects covered are relevant to the 21st Century and to the safe operation of the ship. Some of the topics that will be discussed in detail include:
- The shipping industry’s demands and expectations of crews and rolein the ship’s safety, security and seaworthiness
- Relevant regulations and legislations that affects manning of vesselsand qualification of crews
- Owners’ and managers’ obligations to the crew including discussionson crew contracts, coverage and limitations of insurance, and handlingcrew claims
- Ship working structure and seafarers’ functions including their needfor training and development
- Role of the crewing agencies and how to choose and deal with them
- Crew sourcing, training, retention and career management
Key Learning Outcomes
- Get an appreciation of the importance of crewing as a factor in the ship’s overall quality of service, safety and commercial acceptance
- Gain knowledge on how to implement the requirements of relevant regulations to manning of vessels and the qualification of crews
- Find out common and recent issues affecting crew contracts
- Learn P&I coverage and limitations for crew and gain knowledge on handling crew claims
- Know the crewing requirements of shipmanagers on recruitment and selection, safe manning, and crew competence
- Understand shipowners’ and shipmanagers’ responsibilities and relationship with the crew
- Appreciate crewing challenges and how the industry is finding means to meet and resolve them

Roger J Holt has over 50 years experience in most aspects of shipping including seagoing as Apprentice (Cadet), Officer and Master in a variety of ships; in education as a Nautical College Lecturer and Consultant Trainer; and in Ship Management as HR (Crew) Manager, Training, Operations, Safety and General Manager.
